Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Waxing Half Begins Monday, June 8
- Saturday-Monday: Moon in the sign of Pisces - Plant root crops
- It’s the perfect time to plant another row of Beets, Radishes, and Turnips! By sticking to a regular planting schedule, you’ll have a steady supply of these veggies all year long. Plus, if you’re running low on space, you can also grow onions in rectangular containers.
Later in the Week
- Tuesday-Wednesday; Moon in the sign of Aries - Harvest, weed, and mulch
- Valencia Oranges should be ready to ripen, but it’s a good idea to taste one first to see how sweet it is. If it’s a bit sour, just leave themon the tree—they’ll probably get sweeter as they ripen. Valencia Oranges take a bit longer than one growing season to fully mature.
- Thursday-Friday; Moon in the sign of Taurus - Fertilize and water
- Examine your drip irrigation emitters to ensure water is evenly distributed to all plants. Occasionally, half or more of a plant can become dehydrated. If the drippers are clogged or the plants have grown beyond the emitters’ capacity, this can lead to water stress.
- During our warm, windy days, it is imperative to ensure all container plants are watered regularly. Water stress has emerged as a significant concern for all potted plants. The longer established plants remain in the same container, the diminishing amount of soil available for moisture retention exacerbates this issue.
Other Things To-do
- To keep flea eggs at bay, try using Beneficial Nematodes around your dog’s runs and kennels. These nematodes will eat the eggs before they hatch, which can help keep flea outbreaks in check during the warmer months.
- Fibrous Begonias are now the star of the show in mass planting for summer color! They boast white, pink, or red blooms, and their leaves come in all sorts of colors, making them perfect for sunny spots or shady areas.
