Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
Lunar Phase: Full Moon on Friday, September 16 - Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Capricorn -- ... It is time to reduce the amount of water to all deciduous fruit trees except those that still have a maturing crop. Although the leaves haven’t started to fall, they have stop growing for the year. So technically, dormancy has started.
Later in the Week
Thursday-Friday: Moon in the sign of Pisces - Plant seasonal color- …Garden Mums are now available for planting, Mums the Word, when it comes to fall color.
Other Things To-do
- …Fall and winter vegetable transplants are now available. Cabbage, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Garden Peas and others are available at your favorite garden center. Onion, Shallots and Garlic sets are also available for planting. Be sure to save room for the Sweet Bermuda Onion plants as they are the last of the fall vegetables to arrive. The Stockton Red, Torpedo and others are not available until early November.
- ... This is the last month to feed Poinsettias. Fish Emulsion, Miracle Gro. or any liquid organic fertilizer will do. If the plant(s) are leggy pinch back the terminal growth to encourage the side shoots to develop. Next month, we start the short day treatment so the plant(s) will be in bloom for the holidays.
