1st Weekend Of The Summer Gardening Season – June 25-26

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

Lunar Phase: 4th Quarter Begins On Monday June 27
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Pisces - Plant for root growth
    • …I’d sow the seeds for beets, carrots and radishes in long rectangular planter boxes. The planters can be moved around protecting the young plants on those especially warm days.

Later in the Week

Monday-Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Aries - Harvest, cultivate, weed, and control pests
  • …When cultivating in a vegetable garden, be careful not to disturb the roots around pepper plants. Peppers are shallow rooted and do not like their roots disturbed.
Wednesday-Thursday: Moon in the sign of Taurus: Water, compost, and fertilize
  • … Before applying any granular fertilizer, make sure to water the day before or at least four hours before fertilizing and always water afterwards. This prevent any chance of fertilizer burn.
Other Things To-do
  • ...June is the month to pinch back leggy annuals like petunias and impatiens. I’d remove 50% of the new growth. This will force the side shoots to develop making the plants compact. Also, fertilize with Fish Emulsion or any other plant food to encourage the new growth.
  •   ... And finally, it is not too late to start String Beans from seed. Late planted beans are not as susceptible to weather fluctuation as early season plantings.
