Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Martin Luther King Holiday Monday, January 15- New Moon, Tuesday, January 16
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Sagittarius - Harvest, weed, cultivate, control pests
- For overwintering insects, spray deciduous fruit trees with Bonide All Season Oil or similar product.
Later in the Week
- If you’re planning to compost any of your holiday decorations be sure to cut them into small/tiny pieces. If you can put them through a shredder, this would be ideal as the smaller the pieces, the faster the material will decompose.
Other Things To-do
- When pruning Apricot and Plum trees use a ladder or telescoping pole pruner, to avoid climbing in the trees. This avoids damaging the fruiting spurs.
- When freezing temperatures are expected, bring in your Hummingbird feeder and then reset it out in the morning. Hummingbirds are morning feeders.
