Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: New Moon March, Thursday, March 31
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Capricorn - Prune and fertilize
- After pruning Crape Myrtle trees or bushes, be sure to fertilize with 16-16-16. It's critical to encourage the new growth as Crape Myrtle blooms only on this year's growth.
- Citrus, lemons, limes, oranges, etc. are fed monthly now with Citrus Food through
Later in the Week
- Tuesday-Thursday: Moon in the sign of Pisces/Aries - Plant potatoes, water, and control pests
- Potatoes are one of the easiest edible crops to grow. Seed potatoes are preferred over store potatoes as they aren't treated to retard the growth. You harvest potatoes that are plant now in June.
Other Things To-do
- The area around newly planted trees and shrubs should be cultivated often. This prevents the soil from crusting over, and it's a deterrent for new weeds as you disturb the newly germinated weed seeds.
- You should remove any Ivy that is crawling up the trunk of trees or into the canopy of shrubs. While it looks attractive, the ivy will suffocate and kill the trees and plants if left untouched.
- A great way to bring the sounds of spring indoors is with a wireless remote baby monitor. The transmitter is camouflaged by placing it under an over-turned flowerpot. You can then set it near a birdbath or any other location. It is a great alternative to talk radio.
