Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Pisces - Water, fertilize and start a compost pile
- June is the last month to feed turf before the hot weather begins. By not feeding them in July and August, we avoid potential disease problems from the surge of growth and warm temperatures.
Later in the Week
- Tuesday and Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Taurus - Prune for shaping
- For just bushier mums that were planted in the fall, pinch the new growth after every six inches of growth. This is discontinued in July. Also, stake mums at this time to prevent them from either breaking off or falling over later.
- When removing the sucker growth from the trunk of citrus, it’s better to rip, pull or tear the shoots than to clip them off with a pair of shears. At the base of these shoots are several dormant buds. These buds become active when the main shoot is removed.
