Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Full Moon, Saturday, June 3: 4th Quarter begins on Friday, June
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Sagittarius - Harvest
- When harvesting strawberries, you leave a portion of the petiole attached to the berry. This prevents berry rot from happening quickly.
Later in the Week
- Monday-Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Capricorn - Plant root crops
- This is the time to sow another crop of Beets, Radishes, or Turnips from seed. They can be grown in the ground or, better yet in rectangular planters.
Other Things To-do
- Refresh your snail and slug protection by adding some additional bait. This should be a monthly task as this is a problem year-round, especially in areas kept damp during the summer months.
- Cultivating the soil around summer vegetables with a hand cultivator prevents the soil from forming a crust layer. But be gentle around shallow-rooted veggies such as peppers, squash, and cucumbers.
- With temperatures above eighty degrees, water landscape trees and shrubs in the morning of a rising temperature. You should have your watering completed by 11:00 am.
