3rd Weekend Of The Holiday Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: 2nd Quarter begins on Friday, December 3
    • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Sagittarius -
      • This is a perfect time to trim junipers, pines, redwoods, and other conifers, but don't throw away the trimmings. They can be used as part of your holiday decorations and to keep them fresh, spray the greens with Bonide Wilt Stop.

Later in the Week

  • It's going to be a nice dry weekend so, spray peaches and nectarines with a Copper fungicide for Peach Leaf Curl such as Monterey Liqui-Cop or Bonide Liquid Copper Spray. A second application is made in February
Other Things To-do
  • Nothing is more upsetting than replacing a cut Christmas tree that has dried up before the holidays. So after you have selected the perfect tree, give it the freshness test by grabbing a branch as close to the trunk as possible, then run your hand along the limb toward your chest.
  • If the tree is on the dry side, you will have a fist full of needles. Also, do not be overly concerned if a few needles pop off. Another thing to be on the lookout for is excessive needles on the ground after moving/shifting the trees around.
  • Finally, although the tree is standing in water, I would make a fresh cut by removing at least an inch of the trunk. A tree will reseal itself within two to three hours, so get it in a water stand ASAP.
