3rd Weekend Of The Spring Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase:  2n Quarter begins on Wednesday,  April 1
  • Saturday-Monday: Moon in the sign of Gemini - Plant vines
    • The Potato Vine has medium to dark green leaves and white flowers. It’s in bloom from the early spring to early summer. The foliage is an excellent background for summer annuals such as Marigolds, Zinnias, and Vinca Rosea.

Later in the Week

  • Tuesday/Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Cancer - Seasonal Color
    • The summer flowering annuals are in good supply at your favorite garden center. Marigolds, Impatiens, Verbenas, and Zinnias are a few of the  many varieties available.
Other Things To-do
  • While the temperatures are still cool, it’s an excellent time to transplant container plants. Roses, Citrus, Japanese Maples or any other plant that has been growing in the same container for the last thirty-six months or longer should be replanted; otherwise, they become root bound. You can move them to a larger container or keep them in the same pot by root pruning. I’d slide the plant out of the container, and with a pruning saw slice two to three inches off the sides and four to six inches off the bottom of the root ball. The last step is to add fresh soil to the container and replant.
