Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Full Moon, Saturday, March 31: Easter Sunday, April 1
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Libra -
- The danger of frost has passed, so it’s an excellent time to prune off any of the winter damage to encourage the new growth. Additionally, apply a balanced fertilizer.
Later in the Week
- Monday/Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio -Prune, transplant perennials, and plant for root growth
- Mexican Sage, Artemisia, all ornamental grasses and all varieties of Penstemon should be cut off at the ground each spring. Each year, these plants develop their new growth from the base, not from any of their lateral branches.
- Wednesday/Thursday: Moon in the sign of Sagittarius - Harvest, cultivate, plant tubers and fruit trees
- Dahlia tubers are available for planting. With wet soil, they're planted in the temporary container and then transplant them later into the open ground. This also applies to bareroot fruit trees. When harvesting strawberries, a portion of the green stem should be left on each berry.
Other Things To-do
- It is now okay to cut off the foliage of ferns damaged by the winter cold at the ground. The new growth will develop from the base of the clumps. You encourage the new growth by feeding them with an all-purpose fertilizer.
- And finally, insecticidal soap is recommended to control the Aphids now attacking flowering and fruiting plums and cherries. You should make two applications a week apart.
