Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
Lunar Phase - New Moon, Thursday April 7
Saturday/Sunday: Moon in the sign of Aquarius - Harvest cultivate, weed and control pests…When harvesting strawberries, a portion of the green stem should be left on each berry. Also, the berries should be stored dry so don’t pre-wash them otherwise they develop a gray mold.
Later in the Week
Monday/Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Pisces - Water prune, compost and fertilize …It is now okay to cut off the foliage of ferns damaged by the winter cold at the ground. The new growth will develop from the base of the clumps and you encourage the new growth by feeding them an all-purpose fertilizer.
Wednesday - Thursday: Moon in the sign of Aries - Harvest cultivate, weed and control pests …The white foamy stuff on plants is from the Spittle Bug. It will be around for about a month, and does little damage to plants. It’s not necessary to spray. Instead, just wash them off with a stream of water.
Other Things To-do
It’s time to activate your irrigation system. The rainy season is just about to conclude and warm temperatures will be arriving shortly.
And finally, continue raking up the spent Camellias flowers under the late blooming varieties. Good sanitation is the best control we have for Camellia Petal Blight.
