4th Weekend Of The Spring Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase:  4th Quarter Begins on Sunday, April 8,
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of  Capricorn-  Transplant for root growth.
    • It might be a bit early but planting tomatoes is near the top of many gardeners “To Do” list.  Fresh stock is arriving nowYou could be bold this year by planting a new variety, you’ve never planted before. You’ll be pleasantly surprised this summer.

Later in the Week

  • Monday/Through Thursday: Moon in the sign of Aquarius and Pisces - Plant, Harvest, weed, control pests and prune
    • Beneficial Nematodes are applied to the soil around apple and pear trees to prevent wormy fruit this summer. The worm is the larva stage of the Coddling Moth that overwinters in the soil. In May, Coddling Moth traps are hung in the trees to monitor the activity of those that fly in.
Other Things To-do
  • Dahlia tubers are still available at your favorite garden center.  There is a vast number of varieties to choose that provide color all summer long.
  • It's not too late to start pole or bush beans from seed. They are best started in peat or plastic pots. With the weather warming up, place the pots outside where they get indirect or morning sun. They’re planted in the open ground in three to four weeks.
