5th Weekend Of The Fall Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: 4th Quarter begins on Friday, October 9
    • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Taurus - Plant for root growth and divide perennials
      • Onion Sets. Garlic and Shallot bulbs are now available for planting at your favorite garden center.

Later in the Week

  • Tuesday-Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Gemini- Harvest, weed, and control pests
    • Aphids are controlled on the new growth of Camellias with two applications of Horticultural Oil a week apart.
Other Things To-do
  • A refrigerator is typically used to chill Tulips and Hyacinth bulbs. It is critical to remove apples, avocados, tomatoes, and other fruits first. The ethylene gas given off by these ripening fruits will cause the embryonic flowers inside the bulbs to abort or not fully form.
  • It is beneficial in the fall and again in the spring to add 1/4 cup Epson Salt around each rose bush base. Epson Salt is an excellent source of the trace element magnesium. Magnesium will keep the leaves a dark green color and help in the development of basal shoots.
  • Finally, it's not too early to clean out the gutters of all the debris collected since the last rainy season. Where there is a constant shedding of leaves and needles, you might consider installing gutter screens to eliminate this task next year
