6th Weekend Of The Fall Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: New Moon, Friday, October 16
    • Saturday-Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Leo/Virgo - Harvest, cultivate, weed, and control pests
      • Aphids attack the new growth on Camellias during the fall months. Insecticidal soap is a safe and effective solution. One or two applications should solve the problem.

Later in the Week

  • Thursday-Friday: Moon in the sign of Libra - Water, compost, and fertilize
    • Peach, Plum, Apricot, Cherry, Nectarine, and Plum trees are going dormant so stop watering them.
      • 0-10-10 or similar low nitrogen fertilizer is recommended for feeding Cymbidiums Orchids during the bud and bloom cycle.
Other Things To-do
  • It's an excellent time to repair turf damaged from the summer heat. I'd reseed the entire area to thicken thinning grass. For bare spots, use EZ Seed or similar products. EZ Seed combines grass seed, fertilizer, and a seed cover. It works very well in small areas.¬†
  • ¬†Birds are a wonderful addition to any yard, but they certainly create a mess by scattering the seed all over the place. The seeds then germinate, creating an ongoing task of removing the unwanted vegetation. You prevent the seed from germinating by spreading the seed on a cookie sheet and heating it to 160 degrees for 30 minutes. This will kill the seeds and still be edible for the birds.
