5th Weekend Of The Spring Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase4th Quarter begins on Tuesday, April 14
  •  Saturday/Sunday: Moon in the sign of Sagittarius - Harvest, cultivate, plant tubers and fruit trees
    • Another opportunity to plant Dahlias for summer color. They are still available at your favorite garden center. When grown in containers, they can be moved around so you’ll always have the best viewing option

Later in the Week

  • Monday/Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Capricorn - Plant, and transplant for root growth
    • Radish, carrots, turnips, and beets are started from seed. They are sown into the open ground or in containers. With short-term vegetable crops like Carrots, Radishes, Beets, and others replant during each favorable moon period for yearlong production.
  •  Wednesday/Thursday: Moon in the sign of Aquarius - Harvest weed, and cultivate.
    • When hand weeding Dandelions in turf be sure to dig deep as they have a long taproot.
Other Things To-do
  • This is an excellent time to reseed bare spots in turf before the weather turns hot. To thicken up a lawn, I’d reseed the entire area. For small areas, I’d use Scott’s EZ Seed, as it’s an all in one product, seed, fertilizer and mulch.
