Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Independence Day, Thursday, July 4th
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Cancer - Plant seasonal color
- For the 4th of July, you can find seasonal red, white, and blue colors at your favorite garden center. Also, adding an American Flag to your garden is a great way to show our patriotic colors.
Later in the Week
- Tuesday through Thursday: Moon in the sign of Virgo - Plant vines
- Mandevilla is a tropical vine that is evergreen in mild climates. It blooms most of the summer with red, white, or pink flowers. However, it needs protection from the winter cold.
Other Things To-do
- Although they have been quiet this year, don't let the Yellow Jackets ruin your picnics and BBQs. Several hours before sitting down to a meal set out the Yellow Jacket Traps. Remember that the Yellow Jacket population will increase as summer turns to fall, so don't let your guard down.
- Finally, the best time to water is in the morning when the temperature rises. This puts water in the root zone where the plant needs it most and reduces water stress on hot days.
