6th Weekend Of The Summer Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Saturday-Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Libra/Scorpio -
    • The best all-purpose plant daysThe best time to plant is in the morning while it’s cool or late in the day after the heat has gone. Also,, water the new plant in the original container before planting. This can be done the night before planting.
    • Seasonal color is added to perennials that have finished blooming to extend the blooming season. Petunias, Marigolds, Zinnias, and Vinca bloom all summer and into the fall.

Later in the Week

  • With the arrival of Budworm season, it's important to be vigilant. Keep an eye out for them on Geraniums, Petunias, Flowering Tobacco, and Tomatoes.  If you spot them, remember that BT, Captain Jack Deadbug Brew, or manually picking them off are effective organic solutions.
Other Things To-do
  • Fruit trees should be given a deep drink of water twice a month while the fruit matures and is harvested. Water is applied under the drip line, and just at the trunk if you're using a watering basin; ensure it extends from the trunk to the drip line of the tree.
