7th Weekend Of The Summer Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: Full Moon, Saturday,  June 21
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Capricorn - Plant, Harvest
    • Blueberries are ripening now. You should pick only those berries that have turned blue. The rest will mature over the next few weeks. The Blueberry ripening season lasts about six weeks.

Later in the Week

  • Tuesday through Thursday: Moon in the sign of Pisces - Plant root crops
    •  Beets, Carrots, Radishes, and others can be grown in above-ground planters. The seeds can be sown directly into these containers.
    • You should harvest leaf lettuce often in warm weather as they go to seed quickly. The best time of the day to pick is in the morning.
Other Things To-do
  • With warm weather, be sure to replenish your birdbath often as many birds especially hummingbirds enjoy water on warm days. Not only do they need water for drinking but they splash themselves in it to cool down.
  • Now is the time to prune blackberry and raspberry vines. The fruiting canes are pruned to the ground as these canes will never produce berries again. The next crop of berries will come from the new shoots at the base of the plant.
