Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
Alert: Water, Water Water --- it hasn't rained in weeks, and there are no storms on the horizon. All container plants need to be watered and you should manually set your irrigation system to run one cycle. Lawns and other shallow-rooted plants could use the water.- Lunar Phase: 2nd Quarter begins on Tuesday, February 8
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Aries - Harvest, cultivate, weed, and control pests
- Eggshells make an excellent organic barrier around vegetable gardens for snail control. I'd start saving the shell now, so you have enough. Before storing them in a plastic bag, wash the shells off thoroughly.
Later in the Week
- Tuesday-Thursday: Moon in the sign of Taurus /Gemini- Plant seasonal color, cool-season vegetables, and control pests
- Now is the time to replant color bowls with Cinerarias, Iceland Poppies, Primulas, and Primroses for some very different color combinations.
- Iberis is excellent while perennial border plant. They're in full bloom right now.
Other Things To-do
- All the summer flowering bulbs are now available for planting. Gladiolus, Begonias, Cannas, Caladiums are just a few of the many varieties available
- And many don't have to be planted into open ground. Begonias, Hybrid Lilies, and Tuberoses are just a few of the many summer flowering bulbs that will thrive in containers.
- Seed potatoes are now available for planting. They're one of the easiest edible crops to grow.
