5th Weekend Of The Winter Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

Lunar Phase:  Full Moon: Friday, February 10
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of  Taurus/Gemini -
    • You can continue pruning roses, fruit and shade trees but hold off on pruning Citrus, Avocados, Flowering Trees and plants with frost damage until March.

Later in the Week

  • Tuesday/Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Cancer - Plant seasonal color.
    • Pansies and Violas are plentiful now both in packs and four-inch pots. Planted now, they should continue to bloom until Memorial Day.
Other Things To-do
  • When purchasing a dwarf fruit tree be sure to ask the question how dwarf is dwarf. The height of a dwarf fruit tree can vary from five to eighteen feet. You'll find ultra-dwarf, dwarf, and semi-dwarf forms of the same variety fruit tree.
  • With the moist conditions, snails are very active so it’s not too early to apply Snail Bait, especially to ground covers areas where they typically breed.
