6th Weekend Of The Winter Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Tuesday,  February 14,  Valentine’s Day
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Virgo - Harvest and cultivat
    • You should be diligent in removing the unwanted vegetation. Their growth rate is accelerating with the longer days.

Later in the Week

  • Monday-Wednesday:  Moon in the sign of Libra - Divide perennials, plant for root growth
    • Mexican Sage, Day Lilies, and Shasta Daisy should be divided every three years to reduce the size of the clumps. In addition, divide Agapanthus to keep them from over-growing an area
  • Thursday-Friday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio - Transplant perennials, prune, plant for root growth
    • When transplanting perennials, dig a hole that is twice as wide as the original clump and amend the native soil. In addition, plant them high out of the ground so they don’t bury themselves from sinking.
Other Things To-do
  • Here are a few tips on how you can extend the life of Valentine's Day roses and other cut flowers.                 You should remove the foliage from the base of the stems when placing them in water. You reduce and/or eliminate the bacteria growth by changing the water frequently, removing an additional 1/4 inch of the flower’s stem. The stems are cut on an angle usually under water to remove any air bubbles. To prevent premature nodding of the flowers, add a copper penny to the water.
