6th Weekend Of The Winter Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: 2nd Quarter begins on Friday,  February 23
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of  Pisces - Plant Seasonal Color
    •  Flowering Magnolias are in full bloom. They can be grown in the ground or in containers. They signal that spring is just around the corner/

Later in the Week

  • Tuesday/Thursday: Moon in the sign of Taurus - Plant Seasonal  Color and Leafy Vegetables
    •   Lettuce is available for planting. They planted in rows of any length, and the rows are spaced two to three feet apart. For a continual crop of lettuce plant a new row every three weeks through mid-May.
Other Things To-do
  • Now is the time to root prune established Japanese Maples, Roses, Citrus and many other plants that have been in the same container for 24-36 months.
    • I'd tip the plant(s) over on it side and slide it out. You may have to tug and pull. With a sharp knife, pruning saw, ax, or any other cutting tool trim 2-3 inches of the root mass off the sides and 4-6 inches off the bottom.
    • You are not going to kill the plant(s).
    • Next, you add fresh potting soil to the container and replant. This technique is also recommended for indoor foliage or houseplants.
