Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase:  Wednesday, February 14,  Valentine Day;  New Moon, February 15 Thursday
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Capricorn - Graft prune and fertilize,
    • All forms of Crape Myrtles should be pruned at this time of the year. Many gardeners forget that those round, brownish clusters, are last years dried up flowers and need to be removed.
      • Crape Myrtle doesn’t self-shed the old flowers. After pruning, feed Crape Myrtle with an all-purpose fertilizer to encourage the new growth. Crape Myrtles only bloom on the current year's growth.

Later in the Week

  • Wednesday/Thursday: Moon in the sign of Aquarius - Harvest, weed, clone
    •   Asparagus is harvest when the spears are six to seven inches long and wider than a half inches.
Other Things To-do
  • It's not too early to start from seed, tomatoes, peppers, squash, and others. Start your seeds in pots indoors.
    • The seedlings germinated now will be ready to set out into the open ground in the middle of April.
    • You should pre-moisten the soil before sowing as the dry soil is hard to get wet plus you disturb the seed placement.
  •   It is getting close to the critical 'Popcorn or Pink Bud Stage' with Peach and Nectarine trees. It's just before this occurrence that the last application of Copper Spray for Peach Leaf Cur.
