Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: 4th Quarter begins on Monday, October 17
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Cancer - Plant for root growth and divide perennials
- Onions, Garlic, and Shallot bulbs and/or sets are now available at your favorite garden center.
Later in the Week
- Tuesday -Thursday: Moon in the sign of Leo - Harvest, cultivate weed and control pests
- With the rainy season about to begin, you should set out Terro Ant Stations to prevent the ants from entering. The upcoming El Nino should make ants a bigger problem than they have been in the past.
Other Things To-do
- Don't let your guard down when it comes to snails and slugs. They can do just as much damage in the fall as in the spring. So when planting fall annuals, vegetables, and other herbaceous plants, don't forget the snail bait.
- Finally, October is the last month to fertilize roses and citrus with their typical fertilizer. Next month, you switch to the winter fertilizer 0-10-10.
