Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Sagittarius - Prune, plant potatoes and fruit trees
- Through October, camellias, Azaleas, and Rhododendrons are fed monthly with Azalea, Camellia, and Rhododendron Food. Osmocote is an alternative, with an application now and a follow-up application in August. Also, clean up all the spend flowers that gather at the base of the plants.
Later in the Week
- Thursday and Friday: Moon in the sign of Pisces - Fertilize and water
- Before feeding trees, shrubs, turf, and ground covers, water the day before or at least four hours before applying any fertilizer, and then water immediately afterward. Fertilizer burn is very unattractive.
Other Things To-do
- It's an excellent time to repair and thicken up your lawns. I'd reseed the bare spots; however, you need to reseed the entire area for thickening.
- Marigolds and Alyssum are planted in vegetable gardens as they'll repel some insects and add a splash of color.
