Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: New Moon Tuesday, May 7
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Pisces - Harvest, weed, cultivate and fertilize
- Cultivating and mulching have been the primary methods of controlling weeds and conserving moisture in vegetable gardens. Cultivate lightly under shallow-rooted pepper, squash, and cucumber plants and insulate the ground with a two-inch layer of mulch for moisture conservation.
Later in the Week
- Wednesday and Thursday: Moon in the sign of Gemini - Plants beans and melons
- Thus, now is a great time to plant melons and pumpkins. You can sow the seeds directly into the open ground or plant seedlings from your favorite garden center.
Other Things To-do
- You prevent ants from climbing into plants by applying a two-inch Pest Barrier/Tanglefoot band to the trunk, two feet off the ground. If the ants return, they will be trapped in the sticky gum-like resin, preventing their forward movement.
