Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: New Moon, Wednesday, March 2
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Capricorn- Prune and fertilize
- It's not too late to prune roses. I wouldn't be concerned about the new growth that's emerging; however, be sure to remove all of last year's growth still on the bushes. Also, clean up around the base of each plant.
Later in the Week
- Tuesday-Thursday: Moon in the sign of Pisces - Plant, prune, water, and compost
- The dry weather makes this an excellent time to plant trees, shrubs, vines, and ground cover. As a result, the planting season is off to an earlier than normal start even with the rain we had on Tuesday.
Other Things To-do
- Now is the time to visit your favorite garden center and see all the early flowering vines like the Happy Wonder, Carolina Jasmine, and Gelsemium sempervirens.
- With a permanent marker, mark frequently used tools with measurements like inches and/or feet on the handle. This will help you space plants for rows uniformly by having the measurement within easy reach.
