9th Weekend Of The Winter Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase:  2nd Quarter begins on Wednesday, March 10
  • Saturday-Monday: Moon in the sign of  Aries - Control pests, plant seasonal color, and leafy vegetables
    • For a splash of summer color plant Tiger, Asiatic, and Hybrid Lilies. They grow four to five feet tall and like the morning sun. Lilies are equally as spectacular on decks and patio in containers.

Later in the Week

  • Tuesday-Thursday: Moon in the sign of Gemini - Plant vines, and cultivate weeds
    • Now is the time to visit your favorite garden center and see all the early flowering vines like the Happy Wonder and Carolina Jasmine, Gelsemium sempervirens.
Other Things To-do
  • Now is a good time to apply pre-emergent crabgrass control to turf areas to kill the dormant seeds.
  • Don't overwater new seedlings otherwise, they will die from 'Damping Off' disease. Let the soil surface dry out a bit between watering.
