9th Weekend Of The Winter Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

Lunar Phase: 2nd Quarter begins on Saturday, March 5: Tuesday, March 7 Arbor Day (California)
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Gemini -
    • Summer flowering perennial bulbs such as Dahlias can be planted now. Also available are Cannas, Gladiolus, and Lilies.

Later in the Week

Monday/Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Cancer -  Plant seasonal color
  •    Rejuvenate the existing soil in color bowls by adding all-purpose organic fertilizer before replanting. Now is the time to plant Cinerarias, Iceland Poppies, Pansies Primulas and Primroses.
Other Things To-do
  •  The new foliage is emerging on roses so it will not be long before the Aphids show up. Rose Systemic applied now will control the Aphids before they do any damage to the soft, young, new growth....
  • And finally, here is an easy way to check if seed left from previous years is still viable. You pour the seed into a glass, jar or whatever of water. If the sinks to the it  should be saved and planted, while the others are discarded.
