Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Full Moon, Sunday, February 1
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Cancer/Leo -
- Dwarf English Primroses are now available for planting. They have a notable advantage over traditional primroses because the flower stalks don’t stretch as the days get longer, keeping the flowers just above the foliage.
Later in the Week
- Now is a great time to plant dwarf fruit trees; however, make sure to choose a tree that suits your yard. Here are the typical heights, as they vary: Semi-Dwarf 15' to 20', Dwarf 10' to 15', Ultra Dwarf 8' to 10', and Genetic Dwarf 6' to 8'.
Other Things To-do
- Blueberries are now available and make an excellent companion plant for Azaleas, Camellias, Hostas, and other shade-loving plants. Blueberry plants typically produce 2 to 3 quarts of berries each year.
- This is an ideal weekend to visit your favorite garden center and browse the seed rack. January is a perfect month to sow vegetable and flower seeds into flats for planting in your garden in April.
- After pruning rose bushes, make sure to loosen the metal name tag. All too often, gardeners forget this step. If left unadjusted, the wire of the name tag can girdle the growing rose cane, causing it to die.
