Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: 2nd Quarter begins on Wednesday, August 7
  • Saturday-Monday: Moon in the sign of Virgo/Libra - Plant flowering vines, and seasonal color
    • Coleus with its colorful foliage will brighten up any dark. shady area.

Later in the Week

  • Monday/Thursday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio - Plant seasonal color    Victorian Salvia is available in blue and white. It’s a columnar growing annual to 15” for color to the first frost/
Other Things To-do
  • It's very important to keep Camellias mulched and moist during hot, dry weather. Irregular watering, July through September will produce few or no camellia blooms next year.
  •  Now is an excellent time to control the lawn grubs with Beneficial Nematodes or Bayer Advanced Grub Control. Soil grubs are one of the raccoon’s favorite treats. If you eliminate the food source early on, the raccoons move on before moving in.
  •  Crabgrass can be selectively removed from a grass lawn with a liquid Crabgrass Killer. Before applying any Crabgrass product be sure your problem is Crabgrass. If you’re not sure take a sample of the problem to the nursery professional at your favorite garden center for identification.
