Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Wednesday, August 30 Full Moon: It's a Blue Moon as it's the second full moon of the month.
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Capricorn - Plant Herbs
- Rosemary should be planted individually or with Sage, Oregano, and other woody herds. They required less water than Basil or Pasley.
Later in the Week
- Monday -Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Aquarius -
- Tomatoes get very crowded in their cages by this time of the year.. So, It is not a bad idea to thin some of the shoots to open things up and improve the air circulation.
- Wednesday - Thursday: Moon in the sign of Pisces - Plant Root Crops
- Carrots and turnips like loose soil so you'll need to add more amendments before planting a fall crop.
Other Things To-do
- Do not pull or tear peppers from the plant when harvesting peppers. They have a shallow root system and can be easily uprooted. Peppers are harvested when immature and become sweeter and hotter as they mature.
- You'll need a wire bush to remove the white calcium deposits on clay pots. Once the loose particles are removed, wipe the jars down with Linseed Oil to return the pot's finish to its original color.
- Finally, to prevent fertilizer burn during summer, all plants, including turf, should be watered the day before or at least four hours before fertilizing and immediately afterward.
