1st Weekend Of The Fall Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: Monday, September 4; Labor Day: Tuesday, September 6. The 4th Quarter begins
  • Saturday-Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Aries; Weed, harvest and control pests,
    • Don't put away your Yellow Jackets traps yet. The peak activity season has arrived. Yellow Jackets are easily agitated as it's mating season. Pick up the fallen fruit underneath the fruit tree—they're magnets for Yellow Jackets.
    •  This is the last month to feed and trim leggy Poinsettia plants. Then, we start the short-day treatment in October so the plant(s) will bloom for the holidays.

Later in the Week

  • With Linseed Oil, you can remove the unsightly, white calcium deposits on clay pots. First, remove all the loose residues with a wire brush on the outside of the pot and then wipe the pot down with the oil. This will return the finish to the original color.
Other Things To-do
  • Labor Day signals the beginning of the fall gardening season. It's time to change your annual color, plant fall and winter vegetables and spring blooming bulbs, rejuvenate your lawn, and plant landscape trees and shrubs. Fall is for planting, but unlike the planting spring season, the fall season is short, so do not procrastinate.
  • Finally, when splitting and removing the seeds of hot peppers, wear gloves to protect against any cuts or openings in the skin. Also, please do not touch your eyes, for it will be a moment you'll never forget.
