Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: 3rd Quarter begins on August 24
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Libra - plant seasonal color
- A good selection of summer flowering annuals is still available at your favorite garden center. These annuals bloom until early December or the first very cold night with frost.
Later in the Week
- Tuesday and Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio - Best planting days of the week.
- When planting landscape trees and shrubs, water the plants first while they're in their original container. This is done while you are digging your planting holes. A wet root ball prevents water stress immediately after planting.
Other Things To-do
- When the Blackberry and Raspberry harvest is completed, it's time to prune off the old fruiting canes. These canes are pruned off at the ground as they will never produce again. Next year's crop comes from the new shoots at the base of the plant. You then select the most vigorous canes and attach them to a trellis. All the rest of the growth is cut off.
- And finally, remove all struggling tomatoes, pepper, and other veggies in preparation for planting the fall and winter crops. Seeds can be started now; transplants will be available in September at your favorite garden center.
