Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: 4th Quarter begins on Sunday, September, 2; Labor Day Monday, September 3
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Virgo - Harvest, weed, cultivate, and control pests
- With your fall planting of color and veggies, don’t forget that snails and slugs are still present and continue to be problematic as in the spring. Snail bait is a must with all new plantings.
Later in the Week
- The fall and winter vegetables have arrived at your favorite garden center. Cabbage, Cauliflower, Spinach, Peas and many others are now available to plant. Do not overlook combining vegetables with annual color for dramatically beautiful containers.
Other Things To-do
- Agapanthus, Lily of the Nile, does not self-shed itself when they finish blooming. When the flowers have faded, the flower stalks should be cut off at the ground.
- Before, they are planted into the ground; Tulip and Hyacinth bulbs need to be refrigerated for four to six weeks. November is not too late to plant.
