Last Weekend Of The Summer Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: Full Moon,  Sunday, August 26

  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Aquarius -
    • Garden Mums are now available for planting. They’re available in gold, orange, lavender, bronze, and white.  When it comes to fall color  'Mum is the Word.'

Later in the Week

  • Tuesday/Thursday: Moon in the sign of Aries - Harvest cultivate and weed
    • Bell Peppers have many surface roots so be careful when cultivating around them.
Other Things To-do
  • After flowering, prune off the faded Hydrangea blooms and stems as far back as you can go into the center of the plant. Next, trim the rest of the plant to shape it. This growth will produce next years flowers. This is not necessary with the Endless Summer series.  They bloom on both the old and new wood.
  • And finally, it is natural that dieback develops in the center of lemons, limes, oranges and other citrus. Now is an excellent time to remove the dead twigs, stems, and branches. It's repeated as necessary.
