Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: 2nd Quarter begins on Saturday., August 18
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Sagittarius -
- Boxwood, Privet, Photinia, and Escallonia, should be pruned frequently, so they stay compact. Irregular pruning can cause gaps in the symmetrical shape of the hedge.
Later in the Week
- Now that the Blackberry and Raspberry harvest is completed, it's the time to prune off the old fruiting canes. These canes are pruned off at the ground. From the base of the plant, select the most vigorous canes and attach them to a trellis as these shoots produce next year crop. All the rest of the growth is cut off.
Other Things To-do
- If your lawn has brown patches, take a sample(s) of the problem area your favorite garden center for diagnosis. I'd take a representative sample that is 4" x 4" and about a one inch deep. Once the analysis is completed, you can return it to your lawn.
