Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
Lunar Phase: Thursday, January 19, 4th Quarter begins, Monday, January 16 Martin Luther King Observance- Saturday-Monday: Moon in the sign of Virgo - Harvest and cultivate
- Weather permitting, control the weeds by cultivating. With the days getting longer, the growth rate will accelerate.
Later in the Week
- Thursday/Friday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio - Prune, water, compost, and fertilize
- If you’re planning to compost any of your holiday decorations be sure to cut them into small/tiny pieces. If you can put them through a shredder, this would be ideal as the smaller the pieces, the faster the material will decompose.
- When pruning Apricot and Plum trees use a ladder or telescoping pole pruner, to avoid climbing in the trees. This avoids damaging the fruiting spurs.
Other Things To-do
- When freezing temperatures are expected, bring in your Hummingbird feeder and then reset it out in the morning. Hummingbirds are morning feeders.
- And finally,.it's time to apply your second application of Bonide Wilt Stop as more cold weather is to come.
