Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Saturday, September 22, Autumn Equinox; Full Moon, Monday, September 24
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Pisces - Plant Seasonal Color
- Sweet Peas planted now will bloom for the holidays. Sweet Peas have a hard seed coat, so be sure to soak them overnight in water before planting. Although you find Sweet Pea plants, the seeds provide a more extensive and broader selection especially if you looking for particular colors.
Later in the Week
- Monday/Thursday: Moon in the sign of Aries and Taurus - Harvest, weed, cultivate and plant for root growth
- Pumpkins can be harvested now and stored in a dry location until your ready to use them.
Other Things To-do
- You avoid a neighbor dispute by not planting trees on a fence line. Also, consider the tree size in five to ten years and be sure there will be room.
- For fall color, consider planting Pistache, Raywood Ash, Liquidambar or Red Maples.
- Scott EZ Seed or Pennington One-Step are available to repair bare spots in turf. These products combine seed, fertilizer and top dressing mulch. Traditional grass seed is best for thinning lawns. The critical part of seeding a lawn, regardless of how it' applied, is moisture. If it dries out during the germination period, you will have to start over.
