Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: 2nd Quarter begins Tuesday, October 2
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Gemini - Harvest, weed, cultivate, and control pests.
- Pumpkins are ready to harvest when the foliage starts to turn yellow so stop watering them and let the plants die. Halloween is still weeks away but you can leave pumpkins in the patch or move them to a shady location until you are ready to carve them.
Later in the Week
- With days getting shorter, you don’t need to water as frequently as you last month. I’d reduce the water one to two days depending on the exposure.
Other Things To-do
- Scott's EZ Seed or Pennington One Stip is available to repair bare spots in grass lawns. These products combine seed, fertilizer and top dressing mulch. Traditional grass seed is best for thinning lawns. The critical part to seeding a lawn, regardless of how it' applied, is moisture. If it dries out during the germination period, you will have to start over.
