6th Weekend Of The Summer Gardening Season – July 20-31

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

Lunar Phase:  New Moon, Tuesday August 2t  Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of  Cancer - Prune, water, compost and fertilize
  • ...Shredded newspaper is excellent mulch as well as a perfect way to extend the coverage of bark and other mulches. A half inch layer of shredded paper can double the coverage of traditional mulches. In addition, there shouldn’t be any concern about printing inks.
  •  ...Citrus will drop their fruit from irregular watering. In containers, they’re difficult to over-water but you must remove any saucer. This allows the excess water to freely flow out the bottom so you can water them frequently.

Later in the Week

Thursday-Friday: Moon in the sign of  Virgo -  Plant vines
  • … Honeysuckle is often over looked as a fast growing, water wise,  evergreen vine.   It can be grown on a trellis, arbor or be used as a ground cover.  They also attract hummingbirds.
Other Things To-do
  • ....When removing spent roses is sure too cut the flowers off close to a leaf. When you leave too much stem tissue, the excess stem will die back naturally leaving black tips.
  •   …This summer don’t miss out, on the bold foliage and vivid flowers of New Guinea Impatiens. They prefer a partly sunny location, as they will burn in the heat of the day sun. New Guinea Impatiens provides plenty of color until the first cold  night.
  •   …You can conserve water and keep landscape trees thriving with the Deep Drip Watering Stakes.  The Deep Drip Watering Stakes are hollow, one-inch wide plastic tubes that are inserted into the ground under the canopy of trees. They are adaptable for drip or conventional irrigation system and are moveable each year.
