7th Weekend Of The Fall Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

Lunar Phase: 4th Quarter begins on Saturday, October 22  -
  • Saturday-Wednesday:  Moon in the sign of Leo  - Harvest, cultivate, weed, and control pests   ...When harvesting gourds, cut the stems rather than breaking or tearing them off.  To prevent premature spoilage, leave at least one inch of the stem attached.

Later in the Week

  • …Get head start on all those unwanted weeds next spring by spraying the ground with Monterey Impede. Impede is a pre-emergent herbicide that kills the weeds seeds before they germinate. It can be safely sprayed over and around any rooted trees, shrubs, ground covers without damage. It is also, safe enough to use around bulbs.
Other Things To-do
  • ...With the leaves falling, it is time to clean out your gutters of all the debris that has gathered. You might look to install gutter screens as this will keep them clean and clear all year long.
  • … Stop watering apricots, peaches, cherries, plums, and nectarines. The trees are going dormant and they do not need the moisture.
  • ...And finally, it is not too late to plant bulbs. Actually it one of the better times of the year to do so as the ground is still warm from the summer heat.
