7th Weekend Of The Spring Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: Full Moon, May 5
  • Saturday-Saturday: Moon in the sign of Virgo - Plant flowering vines
    • Climbing roses are now available in bud and bloom. So, go smell the roses. Also, select a variety introduced this century. These varieties bloom on both the old and new wood, so you don't have to be picky when pruning.

Later in the Week

  • Tuesday- Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Libra - Plant Sunflowers
    • Sunflower plants are found at your favorite garden center. They are also available in seeds.
  • Thursday- Friday: Moon in the sign of Scorpio - Plant peppers and beans
    • While it's okay to plant bell peppers, I would suggest waiting until next month to plant the hot pepper varieties when the rainy season has concluded.
Other Things To-do
  • Easter Lily plants are moved outside when the flowers begin to fade. You continue to water and feed them until the foliage turns yellow. When the foliage turns brown, you store the pots in a cool, dry area. The bulbs can be removed from the pot and planted in a shady location next February.
  • Spittle Bug produces a white foamy material on plants. They are harmless, so wash the foam off with water.
