6th Weekend Of The Spring Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: Saturday, April 22, is Earth Day; 2nd Quarter begins                                       on Thursday, April 27
  •  Saturday-Saturday: Moon in the sign of Gemini - Plant beans and cultivate
    • Both pole and bush beans are available at your favorite garden center. You should find seeds as well as seedings or starts.  You can’t go wrong with Blue Lake variety

Later in the Week

  • Monday-Wednesday - Moon in the sign of Cancer - Best all-purpose planting days this month
    •  Tomatoes are best planted deep, up to the second set of leaves. After that, you only want the top two sets of leaves showing above the ground. So, your best plants to buy are tall and leggy.
Other Things To-do
  • Easter Lily plants are moved outside when the flowers begin to fade. You continue to water and feed them until the foliage turns yellow. When the foliage turns brown, you store the pots in a cool, dry area. The bulbs can be removed from the pot and planted in a shady location next February.
  • And finally, to prevent ants from climbing up and down your trees and shrubs, apply Pest Barrier or Tanglefoot to the trunk. A two-inch band around the diameter will prevent the ants from entering the canopy.
