8th Weekend Of The Spring Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: Waxing Half begins on Sunday, May 4
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Leo - Weed
    • After weeding an area, much. A two-inch layer of mulch is recommended for moisture retention and unwanted weeds.

Later in the Week

  • Tuesday-Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Virgo - Plant vines and herbs
    • Bougainvillea, Banksia roses, and Trumpet Vines can be available for planting at your favorite garden center. A strong support system over a fence is recommended.  This prevents the vine from invading your neighbor's yard.
  •  Thursday-Friday: Moon in the sign of Libra -   Plant seasonal color
    • Marigolds and Alyssum are planted in vegetable gardens because they repel certain insects and add a splash of color.
Other Things To-do
  • Tomato plants should be staked or caged early in the growing cycle. I'd also thin out the side shoots to increase air circulation by reducing the density of the foliage.
  • When the flowers begin to fade, Easter lily plants are moved outside. They are continued to water and feed until the foliage turns yellow or brown. The bulbs can be removed from the pot and planted in a shady location next February.
  • Finally, Pest Barrier or Tanglefoot should be applied to the trunks of trees and citrus to prevent ants from climbing up and down. A two-inch band around the diameter will stop the ants from accessing the canopy.
