Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Full Moon, Monday, May 10: Mother's Day Weekend
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Leo - Plant seasonal color and corn
- When replanting color bowls and other containers, there's no need to sterilize the pots. Container plants usually die from common issues such as neglect and water stress rather than diseases. You don't have to use fresh soil; instead, you can recycle and rejuvenate the old soil.
- When planting corn, make sure to plant it close together in either rows or hills. Wind pollinates corn, and inadequate pollination is the main reason for missing kernels in a corn cob. Therefore, align your rows with the direction of the wind.
Later in the Week
- Tuesday-Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Sagittarius - Plant trees, tubers and peppers
- This is a great time to plant Hot Peppers. The rainy season has ended, and the nighttime temperatures have warmed up. However, the planting conditions are not ideal for those Hot Peppers planted earlier.
- Thursday-Friday: Moon in the sign of Capricorn - Plant root crops, especially beets and prune.
- Now is the time to prune flowering trees such as plums, pears, cherries, redbuds, and crabapples. Thin the canopy to open and shape the tree's structure.
Other Things To-do
- May is the ideal month to plant melons. Transplants for watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupes, muskmelons, and pumpkins are all available now. When planting, give them plenty of space to spread out, and water them at the base of the plants.
- Plants absorb water more effectively when the soil is cultivated to remove weeds. A watering basin is recommended to prevent water from running away. Cultivating also helps control unwanted vegetation under the plant canopy.
