8th Weekend Of The Winter Gardening Season

Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do

An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.

  • Lunar Phase: Moon: Waxing Half begins on Thursday, March 6: Californian Arbor Day Friday, March 7
  • Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Pisces -
    • Primroses, Pansies, Violas, and others planted during the fall and winter months need to be groomed at this time. I'd remove any yellow or brown leaves and pinch back any leggy plants or shoots.

Later in the Week

  • Monday and Tuesday:  Moon in the sign of  Taurus - Plant Seasonal color along with cabbage and leafy vegetables
    • Rejuvenate the soil in color bowls by adding all-purpose organic fertilizer before replanting. Now is the time to plant Cineraria, Iceland Poppies, Pansies Primulas, and Primroses.
Other Things To-do
  • Here is an easy way to check if the seed left from previous years is still viable. You pour the seed into a glass jar filled with water. The seed that floats is discarded and sinks to the bottom, so it should be saved and planted. You dry the seed by spreading it over a paper towel and covering it with a second sheet, then plant it soon.
