Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: New Moon, Thursday, February 27: Zone 9; average last of frost
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Capricorn - Fertilize and prune
- When fertilizing fruit and shade trees, use one-half pound of fertilizer per inch of trunk diameter measured two feet off the ground. The fertilizer should be spread under the drip line of trees rather than piled at the trunk. This also applies to Flowering Trees such as Crape Myrtle.
Later in the Week
- Tuesday and Wednesday: Moon in the sign of Aquarius - Harvest and cultivate
- Weeds are growing, so stay in front of them. Cultivating manual with a hoe goes quickly when they’re small.
Other Things To-do
- Even if you haven't planted yet, it's not too early to set out snail bait. It is important to go after the breeding areas like ground covers, under decks and porches or any area that is cool damp and dark. Using a handheld spreader is an excellent way to distribute the snail bait in these areas. By starting now, you can reduce the population that is assembling to attack
- You extend the blooming season of Sweet Peas by removing the seed pods. You also increase the stem length by applying one pound of fertilizer per ten linear feet.
- With a permanent marker, mark frequently used tools with measurements like inches and feet on the handle. This will help you space plants for rows uniformly by having the measurement within easy reach.
