Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
- Lunar Phase: Full Moon, Thursday, March 13: Daylight Savings Time begins on Sunday, March 9
- Saturday-Sunday: Moon in the sign of Pisces - Plant seasonal color
- You rejuvenate the existing soil in color bowls by adding all-purpose organic fertilizer before replanting. Now is the time to plant Cineraria, Iceland Poppies, Pansies Primulas, and Primroses. Easter is late this year, April 20.
Later in the Week
- Monday - Tuesday: Moon in the sign of Leo - Weed and control pests
- The unwanted grasses and weeds are growing rapidly, so don't procrastinate in controlling them.
Other Things To-do
- The area under Camellias should be kept clean of the old spent flowers. Good sanitation practices are our only method of preventing Camellia Petal Blight.
- The new foliage is emerging on rose bushes, so the Aphids will soon appear. Rose Systemic applied now will control the Aphids before they damage the soft, young new growth.
- Finally, I like to line the furrows with toilet paper (TP) when sowing seeds in the ground or flats. Since most seeds are dark-colored and tiny, they are easier to see against a white background.
