Gardening by the Moon Weekend To-Do
An idea as old as agriculture, based both folklore and superstition but there are scientific ideas to back it up.
Lunar Phase: 4th Quarter begins on Saturday, November 19, Thanksgiving-Thursday November 24- Saturday-Monday: Moon in the sign of Leo/Virgo - Harvest, cultivate, weed, and control pests
- Flowering Cabbage and Kale are edible and an excellent garnish or a colorful addition to salads. The first leaves to pick are the ones at the bottom of the whorl.
- With Plums, Peaches and Nectarines, a fall application of Copper Spray is now recommended in controlling ‘Peach Leaf Curl’ and 'Shot-Hole' Fungus. It is applied when 50% of the leaves have fallen off the trees. A second application is made in February.
Later in the Week
- Indoor plants dry out quicker in the winter months than in the summer. In addition, it’s advisable to move them away from heater vents and monitor the moisture level.
Other Things To-do
- It is time to knock down all the watering basins around trees and shrubs, now that the rainy season is here. The water should flow away from the crown of the plant as quickly as possible.
- And finally, with the days getting shorter, it is time to lower the height on your lawn mower.
